Schengen 5-year multi-entry visa for Indians: how the cascade rule works

The EU adopted a visa "cascade" for Indian applicants on 18 April 2024, and it changes how frequent travellers should plan their applications. The short version: your first two Schengen visas build a record, and that record unlocks long-validity multi-entry visas.

The rule itself

If you have obtained and lawfully used two Schengen visas within the previous three years, you are eligible to apply for a multi-entry visa valid for two years. After the two-year visa, the next step is normally a five-year visa, provided your passport has enough validity left.

During the validity of these visas you can enter the 29-country Schengen area repeatedly, staying up to 90 days in any 180-day period - the same travel rights a visa-free national has.

Who qualifies

Three conditions, all of them checkable before you apply:

• You reside in India and are applying from India.
• Two Schengen visas obtained in the last three years, both used lawfully - trips taken, no overstays, entries and exits matching the visa.
• A passport with enough remaining validity for the visa you are requesting. For the five-year visa, that means a passport with more than five years left; renew first if needed.

"Lawfully used" is the part consulates check hardest. A visa you never travelled on does not build the record.

What this means in practice

If Europe is a place you return to - for family, work trips, or holidays - the cascade rewards planning three trips ahead:

• Trip 1 and trip 2: standard short-stay visas. Keep both files clean: travel on the dates you declared, keep boarding passes and stamps.
• Trip 3: apply citing the two prior visas and request the two-year multi-entry visa.
• After the two-year visa: request the five-year visa with a fresh passport.

A five-year multi-entry visa means no more appointment hunting for each trip, which in India's peak season is often the slowest step of the whole process.

What the cascade does not change

The application itself is the same file: cover letter, day-by-day itinerary, insurance, proof of funds, and bookings that match your dates. The cascade changes what validity you can request, not what you must submit. A weak file can still be refused, and a refusal interrupts the record you are building.

FAQ

My two visas were from different Schengen countries. Do they still count?

Yes. The record is Schengen-wide. Apply to the consulate of your main destination as usual.

Does a visa-on-arrival or e-visa to a non-Schengen country help?

No. Only Schengen visas obtained in the last three years count toward the cascade.

Can I request the five-year visa directly?

The published progression is two visas, then the two-year visa, then the five-year visa. Consulates decide validity case by case; requesting more than the progression supports usually gets you the shorter visa.

My passport expires in three years. What should I do?

Renew before applying for the five-year visa. Validity is capped by the passport.
