UK visa priority vs standard from India: cost, timing and when to pay

Rule as of 27 October 2026 · Sources: GOV.UK Standard Visitor visa: apply, GOV.UK get a faster decision, GOV.UK faster decision from outside the UK, GOV.UK visa processing times outside the UK, GOV.UK bank holidays, HMRC exchange rates for October 2026

A UK Standard Visitor visa applied from India usually gets a decision within 3 weeks of your biometrics appointment. Priority costs £500 extra per person and usually brings a decision within 5 working days; super priority costs £1,000 extra and usually brings a decision by the end of the next working day.

Pay for a faster service only when your travel date is less than about four weeks away and your file is simple. If you have six weeks or more, standard service leaves enough room, and the money is better kept for the trip.

What each option costs from India

These are the UK government fees. The rupee figures use the HMRC rate for October 2026, ₹129.0581 to £1. The amount you pay in rupees depends on the rate on the day you pay.

  • Standard Visitor visa, 6 months: £135 (about ₹17,400)
  • Priority service: £500 on top of the visa fee (about ₹64,500)
  • Super priority service: £1,000 on top of the visa fee (about ₹1,29,100)

The faster-service fee is charged per applicant. GOV.UK says each family member applying with you needs their own £500 or £1,000. A family of four on priority pays £540 in visa fees plus £2,000 in priority fees, so £2,540 before any courier or centre charges.

If you visit the UK often, the long-term visitor visas cost £506 for 2 years, £903 for 5 years and £1,128 for 10 years. You can still stay up to 6 months per visit. The priority fee sits on top of whichever visa fee you pay.

How the clock works

The 3 weeks, 5 working days and next working day all start from the same point:

  • If you give fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre, the clock starts on the day of that appointment.
  • If you prove your identity with the UK Immigration: ID Check app, it starts the working day after you finish uploading your documents.
  • For super priority, an appointment or upload on a weekend or UK bank holiday means a decision in 2 working days instead of the next working day.

Two details trip up Indian applicants. First, the times run on UK working days. Indian holidays do not slow the clock, but UK bank holidays do. Second, the target is for the decision. Getting your passport back from the visa centre comes after that.

A December example. Say your biometrics appointment is on Wednesday 23 December 2026 and you pay for priority. Christmas Day (Friday 25 December) and Boxing Day (Monday 28 December) are UK bank holidays, so five working days ends around Thursday 31 December, or Monday 4 January 2027 if the appointment day itself is not counted. A family flying out on 2 January would be cutting it very fine.

When priority makes sense

  • Your travel date is fixed and less than four weeks away: a wedding, a graduation, a business meeting, a cruise departure.
  • You need your passport back quickly for something else, such as a Schengen appointment for the same trip. Our note on Schengen appointments and file strategy from India explains why the order of filing matters when you need two visas.
  • Your file is straightforward. Steady salary or business income, bank statements that match it, a clear reason for the trip and a return date, and ideally earlier UK, US or Schengen travel.

If all three are true, £500 buys you about two weeks. Super priority at £1,000 is for the case where even a week is too long, for example a meeting that was fixed after you had already left it late.

When it does not help

Priority changes when your application is decided. It does not change how it is decided. A thin file paid at priority can simply be refused sooner, and a UK refusal has to be declared on later applications.

GOV.UK lists the situations where a priority decision can take longer than 5 working days:

  • The Home Office needs to check your details with other government departments.
  • The Home Office asks you for more information. You are told how and when to send it.
  • A family member applying with you has to give fingerprints and a photo in person.

The processing times page adds interviews, documents that need checking, high demand and technical outages. On the fee itself, GOV.UK is plain: if the decision takes longer, you will not usually get your money back.

So priority is a poor buy when:

  • You have six weeks or more before travel. The 3-week standard target leaves room for a delay.
  • You were refused a UK visa before. That file needs time spent on the reasons for the last refusal, not speed.
  • Your documents are still coming together. Paying £500 to rush a file with gaps rarely ends well.
  • Your income is irregular or recently changed and needs explaining in a cover letter.

Check it is offered before you book

GOV.UK says you can get a faster decision on most visas from outside the UK, but not that every centre offers both services for every visa. Check whether your visa application centre offers priority or super priority for a Standard Visitor visa, then select it when you book the appointment. If you use the ID Check app, the option shows up during the online application when it is available.

Two more rules from GOV.UK that affect timing:

  • The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel.
  • GOV.UK advises not to book travel until you have a decision.

For a summer trip, that means you can apply from March for a June departure. Applying early on standard service is the cheapest way to get speed.

How we handle UK visitor files

We check your file before you choose a service. If your dates are close but your documents look weak, we say so before you pay the £500, because a faster refusal costs more than a later approval. If the file is ready and the date is tight, we book the priority appointment and file it.

FAQ

Does paying for priority improve my chances of approval?

No. Priority and super priority change how fast your application is decided. The same rules apply to the decision, so the fee buys time, not a better outcome.

Is the priority fee per person or per application?

Per person. GOV.UK says each family member applying with you needs their own fee: £500 for priority or £1,000 for super priority. That is on top of each person's £135 visa fee.

What happens if my priority decision takes longer than 5 working days?

GOV.UK says that if the decision takes longer, you will not usually get your money back. Delays happen when the Home Office checks details with other departments or asks for more information.

How early should I apply on standard service?

You can apply up to 3 months before travel. Applying 6 to 8 weeks ahead gives the 3-week standard target room for a delay, and you avoid the £500 priority fee.
