US visa interview wait times in India (Aug 2026): consulate by consulate, and how to skip the interview

The interview wait for a US visitor visa (B1/B2) is the slowest step in the whole process for most Indian applicants, and it is not the same at every consulate. If you can apply at any of the five, the city you choose changes your timeline by months.

Current B1/B2 interview wait, by consulate

These are the next-available first-time appointment figures published by the US Department of State, data dated 17 August 2026. They move week to week, so treat them as a snapshot, not a promise, and check the live figure before you plan.

• Kolkata: about 4 months - the shortest of the five
• New Delhi: about 9 months
• Hyderabad: about 9.5 months
• Mumbai: about 14 months - the longest
• Chennai: about 7 months. The State Department lists no next-available slot for Chennai on the date we checked, so the 7-month average wait is the figure to plan against.

You apply where you book; you are not tied to the consulate nearest your home. If your dates are tight and you can travel within India for the interview, Kolkata is currently the fastest first-time slot. Weigh the travel cost against the months saved.

The faster route: skip the interview with dropbox

Many Indian applicants do not need an interview at all. The interview-waiver route, known as dropbox, lets you submit your passport and documents without appearing in person. Since 18 February 2025 the rule is stricter than it used to be, so check it carefully:

• You are applying in the same visa category as a visa you held before - a prior B1/B2 for a new B1/B2.
• That earlier visa expired less than 12 months before your new application. The old 48-month window no longer applies.
• You are applying in your country of nationality or residence.
• You have never been refused a US visa.
• You have no other apparent ineligibility.

If all five are true, dropbox is almost always faster than waiting for a first-time interview slot, and the drop-off appointment itself is usually available much sooner than the figures above. If even one is not true, you are in the regular interview queue and the consulate wait times apply.

What decides your real timeline

Three things, in order: whether you qualify for dropbox, which consulate you book, and how complete your DS-160 is when you submit it. A DS-160 with gaps - missing travel history, an unanswered employment line, a mismatch with your passport - gets flagged and can pull a dropbox case back into an interview. Fill it slowly and keep the confirmation page. Book flights only after the visa is in hand. With Mumbai at over a year for a first-time interview, booking travel around an appointment you have not been granted is the commonest expensive mistake we see.
