List as of 22 August 2026 · Sources: Henley Passport Index, Gulf News

An Indian passport now gets visa-free entry to 55 destinations. The number moved twice this year - two destinations added, four effectively dropped - so if your information is from 2025, it is worth re-checking before you book.

What changed for 2026

Added

  • Malaysia - 30-day visa-free stay for Indian travellers. You still need to fill the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online before you fly; visa-free does not mean form-free.
  • Kazakhstan - visa-free entry for Indian passport holders.

Dropped or tightened

  • Iran suspended visa-free entry for Indians in late 2025.
  • Bolivia moved from visa-on-arrival to an e-visa system. You can still go; you now apply online first.
  • Senegal and Ethiopia tightened entry protocols and now ask for additional paperwork.

Despite the net loss, India's Henley ranking improved from 85th to 80th - other passports lost more.

The ones Indian travellers actually use

Of the 55, these carry most of the traffic we see:

  • Thailand - up to 60 days per entry for now. The cabinet approved a cut to 30 days on 14 July 2026; it takes effect 15 days after Royal Gazette publication, which has not happened as of 22 August. Full timeline: flynktours.com/blog/thailand-30-day-rule-indians. Immigration can ask for a return ticket and hotel booking.
  • Malaysia - 30 days, digital arrival card required before boarding.
  • Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius, Maldives - the short-haul regulars. Each has its own arrival form or permit process, so check the current one for your dates.
  • Kazakhstan - new this year, and one of the cheaper international trips from Delhi.

Visa-free, visa-on-arrival and eTA are three different things. Visa-free means no approval before you fly, but almost every country still has an arrival card, a funds question, or an onward-ticket check at the counter.

The 72-hour check

These policies change at short notice - Iran's suspension is this year's example. Before any visa-free trip, check three things about 72 hours before departure:

  • The rule still stands, on the destination's official immigration site.
  • The arrival card or entry form is filled, where one exists.
  • Your return ticket and first hotel booking are saved on your phone.

FAQ

Is visa-on-arrival the same as visa-free?

No. Visa-on-arrival means you queue, pay a fee and get a visa at the airport. Visa-free means entry without a visa. E-visas are a third category: approval online before travel.

Does my passport validity matter for visa-free entry?

Yes. Most countries require 6 months of validity from your arrival date, some ask for blank pages too.

Can I work or study on visa-free entry?

No. Visa-free entry is for tourism and short visits. Work and study need the proper visa category.
