A Maldives 4-night itinerary is shaped by one decision: the resort transfer. Speedboat resorts let you arrive and swim the same day; seaplane resorts fly only in daylight, which can cost you a half-day at each end. Plan snorkelling early and the sandbank or sunset cruise mid-stay.
The Maldives is the rare destination where the itinerary is less about what to see and more about how the days are structured — you are on one island, and the resort is the trip. What genuinely changes the experience is the transfer type, the villa category, and whether you booked the water activities before arriving or paid resort rates on the spot.
Clear immigration, meet your resort desk, and transfer by speedboat or seaplane. Seaplanes operate in daylight only, so a late landing can mean an airport-hotel night — worth knowing before you book the flight. Once in, do nothing but the lagoon.
The best snorkelling of the trip is often thirty metres from your villa. Go early when the water is clearest and the light is good, and ask the dive centre where the reef drops off — every island has a corner that is better than the rest.
The big excursion day. A sandbank picnic is the classic couple's choice; a dolphin cruise at dusk is the reliable one; a two-tank dive if either of you is certified. Book at the dive centre on day one — the good slots go fast on small islands.
Deliberately unstructured. An overwater spa treatment, a long lunch, and the sunset from the water. Confirm your departure transfer time today, because seaplane and speedboat slots are assigned around flight schedules and can shift.
November to April is the dry season with the calmest seas and clearest water. May to October is wetter and windier, and also when rates fall furthest — a real trade-off rather than a bad time to go.

Four nights is the sweet spot for a single-resort trip: enough to properly use the island and the water without the cost of a longer stay. Fewer than three nights and the transfer time starts eating the holiday, particularly at seaplane resorts.
A water villa gives you direct lagoon access and the view people picture; a beach villa usually gives more space for the money and easier access with luggage or children. On a four-night honeymoon most couples we book choose water villa for part of the stay, beach for the rest.
