Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Arrive Baku

Met at Heydar Aliyev airport and driven into the city, about 30 minutes. Check in and take the evening on the seaside boulevard, which runs for kilometres along the Caspian and is where the city walks after dark.

  2. Day 2 — Old City and the modern city

The walled Old City on foot: the Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the caravanserais and the lanes between them. In the afternoon the modern side, the Heydar Aliyev Centre with its curved white shell, and the Flame Towers lit after dark.

  3. Day 3 — Gobustan and the mud volcanoes

An hour south to Gobustan, where the rock carvings run to thousands of figures cut over ten thousand years. The mud volcanoes are a rough track beyond it, small cones that bubble cold mud. Back in Baku by evening.

  4. Day 4 — Absheron peninsula

North to the Ateshgah fire temple, built around a natural gas vent and used by traders from India who worshipped there, and then Yanar Dag, a hillside that has been alight for as long as anyone recorded it. Afternoon free.

  5. Day 5 — Departure from Baku

Breakfast, then the transfer to Heydar Aliyev airport for your flight.

More questions, answered

Is the visa really included?

Yes, the Azerbaijan e-visa is in the price. We file it with your passport copy. It is usually issued in three working days.

Does the price change for a bigger group?

Yes, downwards. Two travellers go on a sedan at this rate. From five the vehicle changes to a van and the per person cost falls; we quote that on request.

Are flights included?

No. Delhi to Baku return usually runs Rs 25,000 to Rs 45,000 per person depending on how early you book.
