France is the single most applied-for Schengen destination from India, and that popularity cuts both ways. The consulate sees an enormous volume of files, so a well-organised application stands out and a sloppy one gets refused quickly. Indian passport holders need a short-stay Schengen visa - a Type C - issued before departure. There is no visa on arrival at Charles de Gaulle, and there is no exception for a first-time traveller with confirmed hotels.
What it costs
The official France-Visas fee schedule sets the short-stay visa at EUR 90 for an adult. Children aged six to eleven pay the reduced rate of EUR 45. Children under six pay nothing, as do the foreign spouse of a French national and family members of EU, EEA and Swiss nationals. If you are going for more than 90 days - to study, to work or to join a spouse - that is a long-stay visa at EUR 99, with a reduced rate of EUR 50 for students accepted by a French institution.
VFS Global collects a separate service charge at the application centre. It is not a government fee, it is not part of the EUR 90, and none of it comes back if the visa is refused. Schengen fees pay for the assessment, not for the outcome.
The two-step application
France runs its own portal, France-Visas, and it is not optional. You complete the form online there first and print the receipt it generates. Only then do you book a slot at a VFS Global centre and attend in person to give fingerprints and hand over the file. People who go straight to VFS without the France-Visas receipt get turned away at the door.
Biometrics are valid for 59 months. If you gave fingerprints for any Schengen visa in the past five years, you may not need to give them again - but the consulate decides that, and it is safer to plan for an in-person appointment.
Timing
You can apply up to six months before travel and no later than 15 days before it. In practice, apply as early as the six-month window allows during the summer and the Christmas period, when appointment slots in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai disappear within hours of release. Processing is normally about 15 calendar days from the appointment, and the consulate may extend that to 45 calendar days if it needs additional documents or checks.
Apply to France, or to another country?
The Schengen main-destination rule decides for you. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If the nights are split evenly, apply to the country you enter first. A trip that flies into Paris and then spends most of its nights in Spain belongs to Spain, and filing with France instead invites a refusal on jurisdiction alone - one of the most avoidable rejections there is.
What to carry
A passport valid at least three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area, with two blank pages and issued within the past ten years. Two photographs to Schengen specification. The signed France-Visas form and receipt. Travel medical insurance covering a minimum of EUR 30,000. Confirmed return flights and accommodation covering every night of the trip. Six months of bank statements, salary slips or business proof, and the last two income tax returns. A cover letter that explains the itinerary and states clearly who is paying.
If someone in France is hosting you, you need an attestation d'accueil - a hosting certificate validated by the local mairie - rather than a hotel booking for those nights.
One new thing at the border
Europe's Entry/Exit System now registers non-EU travellers biometrically at the external Schengen border. It replaces the passport stamp, it costs nothing and there is nothing to apply for, but the first crossing takes longer than it used to. Allow extra time on arrival at Paris or wherever you enter the area.
The 90-in-180 rule
A short-stay visa allows up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, not 90 days in France plus more elsewhere. The clock is shared between all 29 countries. Whether the consulate grants single or multiple entry depends far more on your previous travel history than on what you ask for, and first-time applicants usually receive a visa matched tightly to the dates they booked.
