Kerala or Kashmir: Which Is Better for a Family Holiday from Delhi?
By Flynk Travel Desk · · Updated

Families usually ask us this with one school break and a budget already fixed. Here is the comparison the way we give it on the phone. The month you travel decides more than anything else.
The short answer
- Travelling between October and March: Kerala. The monsoon is over, the hills around Munnar are cool, and the coast is warm without being sticky. Kashmir in these months is cold, and from December it is snow country.
- Travelling between April and June: Kashmir. Srinagar is pleasant while Delhi is at its hottest, and Gulmarg and Pahalgam are green. Kerala in May is hot and humid, and the monsoon usually arrives in early June.
- You want snow for the children: Kashmir, December to February. Gulmarg is where it reliably settles.
- You are travelling with grandparents: Kerala is the gentler trip. The longest drive on our route is about four hours, and the houseboat night needs no walking at all.
Getting there from Delhi
- Kerala: fly Delhi to Kochi, about three and a half hours non-stop. Return fares are typically ₹9,000 to ₹16,000 per person, depending on how early you book.
- Kashmir: fly Delhi to Srinagar, about an hour and a half non-stop. The short flight is the main reason Kashmir works for a 5-night trip squeezed into a long weekend plus leave.
What five nights looks like
Kerala, 5 nights: Kochi airport to Munnar (about four hours by road), two nights in Munnar's tea country, a three to four hour drive across to Thekkady for the spice hills and Periyar, then one night on an Alleppey houseboat with lunch, tea, dinner and breakfast on board. That is about twenty hours on the water. A 7-night version adds Kovalam beach.
Kashmir, 5 nights: Srinagar with a night on a Dal Lake houseboat, a day in Gulmarg with the Gondola Phase 1 ride to Kongdoori (Phase 2 to Apharwat depends on the day's availability), and Pahalgam. In Pahalgam, the local union runs its own cabs to Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari. Outside vehicles are not allowed, so you pay these directly, about ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 per cab for all three.
What it costs
Prices as on 2 October 2026, flights extra on both:
- Kerala: from ₹19,999 per person, two sharing, 5 nights with breakfast at the hotels, the houseboat night with all meals, and a private car and driver. Hotel lunches and dinners are extra (budget ₹400 to ₹800 a head per meal), and entry tickets run about ₹300 to ₹800 per person per day.
- Kashmir: from ₹23,100 per person for two adults in standard season, 5 nights including the Dal Lake houseboat night. The Pahalgam union cabs are paid separately, as above.
So Kerala is a little cheaper on the package, and Kashmir is usually quicker to reach. For a family of four, ask for a quote rather than multiplying these numbers: per-person prices drop when four share a car.
Things that catch families out
In Kashmir:
- Prepaid SIM cards from outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work there. Carry at least one postpaid connection in the family so the driver and hotel can reach you.
- Carry cash. Cards work in Srinagar, but less so once you are out in Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
- Pack heavy woollens from November to March, and sunglasses for the snow glare.
In Kerala:
- The monsoon runs roughly June to September. The hills are at their greenest, but you will get heavy rain and cloud over the viewpoints. If you need dry weather, travel after October.
- The roads in the hills are winding. If anyone in the family gets car sick, keep the medicine handy for the Kochi to Munnar drive.
- Entry tickets are paid at the gate. The Periyar boat and Eravikulam National Park are the main ones.
Which one suits your family
- Kerala suits families with young children or older parents, travel between October and March, and anyone who wants a slow trip with one unusual night (the houseboat).
- Kashmir suits families escaping the summer heat between April and June, children who want snow in December to February, and anyone short on travel time, because the flight is shorter.
Questions families ask
Which is cheaper, Kerala or Kashmir? Kerala, slightly. On our current packages it is ₹19,999 per person against ₹23,100, both 5 nights for two people, flights extra. Kashmir has the Pahalgam cabs on top, about ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 per cab.
How many days do we need? Five nights covers the main circuit in both. For Kerala, seven nights lets you add Kovalam beach at the end without long drives.
Can we do Kerala in the monsoon? Yes. Hotels are quieter and the hills are green, but expect rain every day and cloud over the viewpoints. Families who want beach time should wait for October.
When is the snow in Gulmarg? December to February is the reliable window. In March to May you get blossoms and gardens instead, and in June to August green meadows.
